Buddy Classes Perform in Assembly

On Tuesday 19 October we performed
with our Buddy Class (R12) in school assembly.
We sang 'Once Upon a Time in a Nursery Rhyme'
which is the story of Goldilocks and the 3 Bears.
Papa Bear and Mama Bear were from Room 12
and we were all Baby Bear.
Shaye was Goldilocks.
We made and wore bear masks.
Our parents came to watch us perform.
It was exciting!

Taranaki Blowout

Our first study in the 4th term
was related to natural disasters.
Our major focus was on volcanoes,
especially being prepared
in the event of a volcanic eruption
on Mt. Taranaki / Egmont.
We learnt that our mountain is a dormant,
or sleeping, volcano
and that it could erupt one day.
Other volcanoes are active (they are erupting now)
and some are extinct (will never erupt again).
We listened to the Maori legend
'The Battle of the Mountains'.
and made mountains to show the present position
of the different mountains.
We had a special lunch
that included non-perishable items
that could be included in an emergency / survival kit.
We enjoyed noodles, tinned fruit & fish, muesli bars,
popcorn, crackers and other food
that had been dried or in sealed containers.

Grass Men

We put some grass seed and potting mix

into a stocking,

then tied a knot to make a ball.

We used rubber bands to make the ears and nose

and glued on some eyes.

We sat our heads in a container of water

and sprinkled water over the top.

When the grass had grown

we gave our grass men a haircut.

Growing Plants Indoors

We are learning about plants
and how to take care of them.

We have drawn plants
and labeled the parts.

We have planted bean seeds,
we watered them
and put them on the window sill
to see if they will grow.
After we had planted and watered
one seed we put it in a dark cupboard.
I wonder if it will grow?
Another seed we planted
we put on the window sill
but we did not water it.
Will it grow?
Our beans needed water and light and warmth from the sun to grow.

We grew some beans in water to watch the different stages of their growth.

Mrs Fell made us some marshmallow Easter eggs. They tasted yummy.

Mrs Fell's Recipe for Easter Eggs

Marshmallow
Mix together 1Tbsp gelatine
and 1/4 cup cold water.
Stir 1/2 cup hot water and 1 cup sugar
over low heat until sugar dissolves.
Combine both mixtures, bring to the boil.
Boil for 6 minutes.
Cool to lukewarm.
Add 1/2 tsp vanilla and 1 tsp lemon juice.
Beat at high speed until thick and creamy,
about 5 minutes.

Fill baking dish with flour.
Make dents in flour with an ordinary egg.

Pour marshmallow into each dent.
Wait for it to set, then put 2 halves together.

Chocolate
Melt 125 grams Cooking Chocolate and
60 grams of Kremalta over gentle heat.

Dip eggs in chocolate and then roll in coconut.

When set, EAT. They are delicious.

On Friday 12 March
'The Minstrel'
came to visit Turuturu School.

Through 'Hiwi the Kiwi' he taught us
how to go fishing safely
and also to protect our kai moana
so there will always be plenty
in the sea for future generations.

His songs have been very popular with everyone.

The Minstrel asked everyone
to write a story
about a fishing adventure,
and the winner would receive
their very own fishing rod.

A very excited Neve (R9) was the winner
from the junior classes.

Here is her story.

My dad and I
went fishing
in the ocean.
I got one big fish
and we ate it
for dinner.
